'Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms.'- Angela Carter

Halloweeeeen!

So it's Halloween in two days time and I am SOOO excited! The only problem being, I'm stuck on what to wear as a costume. Many ideas have flicked through my mind; from vampire to witch, mime to a zombie, Alice (Zombieland style) a pirate! Nothing has stuck so far and with a presentation due in tomorrow there isn't really a lot of time left. What I have done though is give my nails a trial run ready for the day :).

Not too bad for a first go but could definitely be better :). I followed the nail guide on the lovely Swansea University Fashion Society blog. Go take a look at the lovely designs they've created - all I need to do is invest in a hair clip!

What are you guys dressing up as for Halloween? Please feel free to share ideas! I saw a wonderful photo of someone dressed up as Katsu (Daughter of Smoke and Bone) and wish I had the time/ creativity to do something as good as that :).

A gender journal.

My course at university is basically focused on gender and all of its encompassing issues due to the modules (classes) I've chosen to study. I've always been interested in gender and how it relates to society, the portrayal of it in literature and how it functions in my every day life. I'd never actually stopped to think how it impacts on my every day life and the issues that are raised through this. My lecturer for my Gender and Culture and Introduction requested that we keep a gender journal for the week and it has opened my eyes to the stereotypes which surround us daily. I thought I'd share it with you guys :) it's really interested me!

Feature & Follow #9

So here's Fridays meme: Feature and Follow hosted over at Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The aim of the blog is to gain new followers! :)

How to participate:

Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers -- but you have to know -- the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.

What sets this Hop apart from others, is the Feature. Each week they will showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow the Features and you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee & Alison Can Read) as a courtesy.
Featured Blogs: Kinxs Book Nook & Shelf Addiction

Q: When you step out of your USUAL genre what do you like to read? Best books in that genre?

My usual genres are anything paranormal, sci-fi or fantasy. When I step out of these - which isn't often if I'm honest! - it tends to be crime novels, mysteries, anything really with a strong female protagonist. I've recently discovered J. D. Robb which is my new love so we'll see how this goes :).

Is feminism still relevant?

A few days ago I was debating with my boyfriend about the relevance of Feminism in the 21st Century. He argues that it is no longer needed and that the spectrum is slowly rotating so that the males will be in need of some form of 'Masculinism'. I, on the other hand, argue that Feminism is still relevant to today's society. I agree that some women/men parade under the title of 'Feminist' but are in fact sexist pigs - I'd go as far as to argue that they'd be on par or worse than the males which still believe that women are a species which come under the males. The term 'Feminism' is misunderstood by many in my opinion. Most picture a stereotypical feminist to be masculine-like in appearance (er, irony?), homosexual, angry, rough and to have a full hatred of men. The movement is to fight for equality, not to be above anyone else. Anyway, the point of this post is me gathering some viewpoints and opinions on what you guys think of feminism and the 21st century? What do you define it as? Is it still relevant to the Western world? Why?

I'm eager to write a blog report on this so any opinions would be incredibly helpful :).
