Featured Blogs: Book Cupid & Bookworm in Love

Q: Have you ever read a book that you thought you would hate -- ? Did you end up hating it? Did you end up loving it? Or would you never do that?
The first one was Harry Potter. As you can see just by looking around my blog that has drastically changed. The first time I read the series was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Welsh. I read the first page and didn't like it. At that age I wasn't willing to give it a chance again but when I did WOW, so addicted and still am.
Another one was all of the Sarah Waters books. As a fantasy/ sci-fi/ dystopia lover I wasn't expecting to enjoy any of her books. Again, proven wrong and absolutely loved all of them that I have read so far!

Q: Tell us about the most emotional scene you've ever read in a book - and how did you react?
Gaah, what a question. There are so many of them that it's hard to pick one. It's  going to have to be two.
The first one is the reunion of Sirius Black and Harry Potter and the hope that follows this new relationship. It's made all the more emotional by the horrendous outcome in the fifth book.
The second happens at the end of Delirium. I'm not going to share what it is because of those who may not have read it, but those of you which have will agree. It's heartbreaking!

I wouldn't say that any of my reading is 'guilty'. I'm happy to admit what I read to people and if they judge me, then meh! More fool them on missing out on some awesome books :). How about you guys?

Q: Activity! Hopefully warm weather for most of us is here soon…so tell us about your favorite outdoor reading spot. Or take a picture.
I don't actually have a favorite reading spot. It's probably my bed if I had to pick somewhere, but I can easily curl up pretty much anywhere and lose myself in a book. Although, when I someday have my own dream house, I'm definitely getting myself one of these!

Q: Confess your blogger sins! Is there anything as a newbie blogger that you've done, that as you gained more experience you were like -- oops?

Definitely accepting any and every review request that came my way. I'm slowly learning to decline the ones which aren't in my genres etc. Another habit is getting far too click-happy on Net Galley. I'm weaning myself off of this habit right now!

Q: We always talk about books that WE want. Let's turn it on its head. What books have you given other people lately?

I haven't bought a book for anyone lately but what I have done is buy a Kindle Paperwhite for my Mam for her 50th :). Myself, my boyfriend, my sister and her boyfriend all chipped together and bought her this for her birthday and put a few books on it for her! Needless to say, she hasn't looked back since. She's speeding through her books whereas previously it used to take her ages! SUCCESS :D.

Gemma Malley's trilogy: The Declaration, The Resistance, The Legacy. Incredible books! They absolutely blew my mind away and I couldn't put them down. The first one was read in one sitting. If you guys haven't read these yet then what are you waiting for?! :P

Q: Who is your favorite villain from a book?

Tough call, I don't really tend to 'like' villains haha they really make my blood boil! I suppose that's the whole point though. Going for the 'best' villain - the one who put me through all the emotions possible - would have to be Bellatrix Lestrange. I adore her in the films (bit of a Helena Bonham Carter crush though!) but in the books ooooft! She destroyed me when she killed two of my favourite characters; Sirius and Dobby :(. Who's yours?

To write more reviews! I started off really well and then began slacking so I definitely need to up my game. I also need to find time for my blog each day despite my Masters course. Fingers crossed I'll stick to these :). Book wise, I'm hoping to read 100 books this year on my Goodreads challenge and to achieve Level 4 in the Dystopia Reading Challenge! Busy, busy :).

Q: What have you learned from book blogging that you didn't know before about the publishing industry?

I've only been blogging for roughly 6 months so I definitely still have a lot to learn. It's been really nice to chat and share views with new up and coming authors, it has also made it a lot less daunting to pursue a career in publishing. I had no idea that websites such as Net Galley existed and that you were able to request ARC's to read and review. It's also cleared up what exactly I want to do for me through exploring difference routes and I'm so excited to finish my Masters and to start job hunting. Nothing makes me happier than the thought that one day I may be able to be a member of the team which puts so many books on shelves :).

Ohh, so many choices! I think from the films I've seen recently it would have to be Total Recall. It was an amazing film and if it was a book, it'd be right up my street!

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

Not at all, in fact I'm terrible for hoarding very similar books. If I find a book that I love I then go on a hunt for something very similar. It took me a very long time to find something up there with Kelley Armstrong (she popped my paranormal virginity!) when I initially started book hunting but now it's like second nature. It's brilliant in a way, but I also limit myself in others. Now that I'm getting older I like to think I'm branching out a bit into other genres but who knows :P.

Q: When you step out of your USUAL genre what do you like to read? Best books in that genre?

My usual genres are anything paranormal, sci-fi or fantasy. When I step out of these - which isn't often if I'm honest! - it tends to be crime novels, mysteries, anything really with a strong female protagonist. I've recently discovered J. D. Robb which is my new love so we'll see how this goes :).

Q: What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic detail of goriness...

The Little StrangerGreat question and so many options! Any of Kelley Armstrong or J. R. Ward books would do the trick, they have the perfect balance of supernatural, gore and sex which would make for an excellent Halloween movie BUT I think I may have to go with Sarah Waters; The Little Stranger. It's a Neo-Victorian text which is one of the few that full on gave me the shivers! For the text synopsis click here. The uncanniness and uneasiness which Water's weaves throughout the novel (is it haunted? Is it psychological? Who?) would be the perfect film adaptation to curl up with at Halloween!

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with your blog? Is it to one day become an author yourself, just for fun, maybe get some online attention, or maybe something very different?

It started off that I just wanted to talk books with other book lovers and to also expand my reviewing skills. I desperately want to get into publishing as agent/editor, either are my dream jobs. As any reader, I'd love to be granted the talent to put together a mind blowing novel but as of yet this inspirational idea has yet to hit me. Who knows what the future holds, I am only 21 :).

Q: What hyped up book was worth all of the fuss?

It has been a long time since I've gotten to speak about it so I definitely have to say the entire Harry Potter series! I'm still mourning the end of the series, the books and films always leave me with an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia and sadness that they're over. Usually, I'm adamant that books come before films, but the very first film is what made me retry the first two books. So, so glad that I did because they improved dramatically the more Ms. Rowling wrote. It's a shame the owls lost my Hogwarts letter...

Fifty Shades Trilogy Bundle: Fifty Shades of Grey; Fifty Shades Darker; Fifty Shades FreedQ: What hyped up book do you think was not worth all the talk?

Fifty Shades without a doubt. I remember reading an extract on Amazon before everyone went crazy about it and just being completely put off by the awful and, in a sense, immature writing style of it. Admittedly, everyone went nuts so I thought right let's see what this is all about. The first book = awful. The second = better. The third = to be confirmed. It's still sat in a pile!

The PenelopiadQ (Alison Can Read): Best cover? What is the best cover of a book that you've read and loved?

Hmmm, good question. There are so many lovely covers and I'm terrible for judging books by their covers. It's so nice to look at your books and they're so pretty haha. I thinkkkk I'm going to pick The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. It just looks really cool! It's a shame it's only on my Kindle. May have to buy a hard copy for the shelves.

Neuromancer (Sprawl Trilogy, #1)Q (Parajunkee): What is the best cover of a book that you’ve read and didn’t like?

Awkward. I tend to just go off books because of their content no matter what their wrapping is. If I had to chose, I'd probably go for William Gibson's Neuromancer. I absolutely hated the book, didn't understand it, didn't like it. Have no interest in even trying to understand it, BUT the cover is pretty cool :).
