INTERVIEW: Lindsey Kelk Talks About Her New Book

Today I have the amazingly talented and completely hysterical Lindsey Kelk on the blog to talk about her latest novel, What A Girl Wants.

Your latest novel What A Girl Wants is a follow up to the brilliant About A Girl. Can you tell us a little bit about these novels?

The Tess books very much came about because of all the things that had been going on in my life and in the lives of my friends over the last couple of years. About a Girl was about that moment in life when you think you’ve got it all worked out and then, out of nowhere, you realise that you know absolutely nothing about anything.

What a Girl Wants takes it one step further and looks at what happens when you have to make a choice. I think there’s a massive amount of pressure on people, but especially women, to make big important choices, younger and younger these days. You’ve got to be super successful before you’re thirty, you’ve got to find the one, you’ve got to beat your biological clock… It’s all so much. What happens if you make the wrong choice? Will you regret it forever? This time we see Tess in that position – smart choice or brave choice, safe option or random chance? It’s a position we all find ourselves in at some point.

How did you find the writing process for What a Girl Wants? Was it easier/ harder than About a Girl?

The process in general was the same – equal parts fun and balls out terror – but life in general was out to get me during this one! I was going through a bad break up, my grandmother who I was very close to got ill and passed away and all other kinds of assorted nightmares kicked in. Plus we had the worst winter in decades in New York so it wasn’t the easiest thing to transport myself into a summery mindset! But writing is always cathartic so in the end, I think it helped. Hopefully you won’t see any of that in the book!

How different is the writing process between these books and your I Heart series? Do you have a preference?

Writing the I Heart books feels like such a treat now! It’s easy to slip back into the characters and I so love seeing what they’ve all been up to. I know that sounds crazy because they’re in my head but I have to be at the laptop to catch up with them. Writing the Tess books is an adventure because I’m still getting to know the characters, I feel like I learn a lot about myself when I write those books.

Who is your absolute favourite character to write and why?

Oh, it’s so hard to choose one! I really do love catching up with Angela and Jenny, it’s like sitting down with an old friend but it’s always fun to meet new characters. I love Amy in the ‘Girl’ books and I love Tess. And Al. And Keikipi. Oh god, I’m rubbish.

What’s the best bit about being an author for you?

There are so many parts of the job that I love, the freedom to travel, keeping my own schedule, not having to get up in the morning! Mostly, I think I just love telling stories. It’s all I ever wanted to do and I think it’s what I’m best at so I’ll never take it for granted.

Finally, how has ‘going digital’ been for you? Do you find that social media/ blog tours etc. are an improvement on previous methods of getting your books out there?

Oh, it’s so important. I came around at the beginning of it all – I Heart New York is five years old this year! Back then ebook sales were a tiny margin of your overall sales and there weren’t many blogs at all. I was a beauty blogger back then and I think there were maybe ten or so of us, probably the same with books! Now, everything hinges on getting the word out there and when everyone’s fighting for retail space Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are amazing ways to connect directly with the readers and blogs are great resources to get genuine feedback from genuine readers.

From a personal standpoint, I love social media. Yes, it’s important for me as a marketing tool but I’ve made amazing friends online, I’ve met incredible men and women who have made me feel less alone and stopped me from going mad. I don’t know where I’d be without it.

What A Girl Wants
What A Girl Wants
Tess Brookes was the girl with a plan. Now she's the girl with a choice. Should she stay in London and start her own advertising agency with her best friend and potential boyfriend Charlie? Or should she head to exciting Milan to pursue both a new career as a photographer and a new man, the enigmatic and elusive (and highly irritating) Nick?

For the first time, Tess has to choose between the life she always dreamed of and a future she never imagined possible. With her heart and her head pulling her in different directions, Tess has to make a life-changing decision about What a Girl Wants.

Lindsey Kelk is a British writer and used to be a children’s book editor. When she isn’t writing, reading, listening to music or watching more TV than is healthy, Lindsey likes to wear shoes, shop for shoes and judge the shoes of others. She loves living in New York but misses Sherbert Fountains, London and drinking Gin & Elderflower cocktails with her friends. Not necessarily in that order.

REVIEW: The Distance Between Us - Kasie West

The Distance Between Us - Kasie West
The Distance Between Us
Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

REVIEW: It's Kind of a Funny Story - Ned Vizzini

It's Kind of a Funny Story - Ned Vizzini
It's Kind of a Funny Story
Like many ambitious New York City teenagers, Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan's Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life -- getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job -- Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does. That's when things start to get crazy.

At his new school, Craig realizes that he's just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away. The stress becomes unbearable and Craig stops eating and sleeping -- until, one night, he nearly kills himself.

Craig's suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, isolated from the crushing pressures of school and friends, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.

Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a moving tale about depression, that's definitely a funny story.

REVIEW: Perfect Escape - Jennifer Brown

Perfect Escape - Jennifer Brown
Perfect Escape
Kendra has always felt overshadowed by her older brother, Grayson, whose OCD forces him to live a life of carefully coordinated routines. To Kendra, the only way she can stand out next to Grayson is to be perfect, and she has perfection down to an art -- until a cheating scandal threatens her flawless reputation.

Behind the wheel of her car, with Grayson asleep beside her, Kendra decides to drive away from it all -- with enough distance, maybe she'll be able to figure everything out. But even in the midst of the road trip's flat tires, gas-station food stops, and detours to quirky roadside attractions, eventually Kendra must stop running and come to terms with herself, her brother, and her past.

HPM: J. K. Rowling's New Pottermore Content

Hey guys! I've made a vlog for you today of a reading of the latest content that Queen Rowling has posted on Pottermore - we get a glimpse at what life is like for the 30 year old Harry! Please excuse my fussing in the video, apparently I can't read off a screen and sit still at the same time.
 Hope you enjoy :).

What did you guys think of Rowling's new piece?
Are you as excited as I am about it?

REVIEW: About A Girl - Lindsey Kelk

About A Girl - Lindsey Kelk
About a Girl
I’d lost my job. I’d lost the love of my life. My mum wasn’t talking to me. My best friend was epically pissed off. And my flatmate probably had a hit out on me by now. I never meant for things to get so out of hand…

Tess Brookes has always been a Girl with a Plan. But when her carefully constructed Plan goes belly up, she’s forced to reconsider.

After accidently answering her flatmate Vanessa’s phone, she decides that since being Tess isn’t going so well, why shouldn’t she try out being Vanessa? With nothing left to lose, she accepts Vanessa’s photography assignment to Hawaii – she used to be an amateur snapper, how hard can it be? Right?

But Tess is soon in big trouble – she isn’t a photographer, she isn’t Vanessa, and the gorgeous journalist on the shoot with her, who is making it very clear he’d like to get into her pants, is an egotistical monster.

Far from home and in someone else’s shoes, Tess must decide whether to fight on through, or ‘fess up and run…

HPM: Why the Harry Potter series means so much to me

Harry potter monthMan oh man. How do I put into words why the world of Harry Potter and J. K. Rowling are so important to me? I think this is something all Potterheads would struggle with. It's hard to state exactly what it is that really gets to me about Harry Potter. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that's gotten me so addicted to the series, so in awe of the author and as a complete slave to the fandom, the world, just everything about it really. I'm going to try my best though and see what comes out of my ramblings!

REVIEW: Landline - Rainbow Rowell

Landline - Rainbow Rowell
Landline
Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it’s been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply — but that almost seems besides the point now.

Maybe that was always besides the point.

Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her — Neal is always a little upset with Georgie — but she doesn’t expect to him to pack up the kids and go home without her.

When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything.

That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts . . .

Is that what she’s supposed to do?

Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?
