REVIEW: Antigoddess - Kendare Blake

Antigoddess - Kendare Blake
Antigoddess (Goddess War, #1)
Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

This was such a great read. I don't often read books that delve into mythology but I really enjoyed this one I'd been waiting for it to come out for a long time so you can imagine how happy I was when one turned up on my doorstep! It was definitely a *book shimmy* moment. The book follows Athena as she attempts to save the Olympian gods. They are all slowly dying and a war is breaking out amongst the remaining gods. There is only one option that could potentially help them: finding Cassandra.

I really loved reading this book. I felt like I was being taught elements of Greek mythology too - something that I have always wanted to learn more about but never managed to get round to it. This book forced me to look up the different gods so that I could get the most out of the book and I really loved doing it! The characters were brilliant - from what I could tell they kept the characteristics of the mythology of the gods but also gave them a modern twist. It was brilliant and really entertaining.

Antigoddess is completely packed with plenty of action and it kept me on my toes throughout. I couldn't wait to see how everything would unfold! It was so exciting and such an original twist - I can't wait to read more of Kendare Blake's work. The only reason this book fell short of 5* is the ending. It felt a little anticlimactic in a way and I really wasn't happy with one aspect (which I am sooo not mentioning because it's such a big spoiler!). However, there is a cliffhanger so I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

Kendare Blake is such a talented lady, creating suspense, excitement and tension so easily. I definitely recommend this book to lovers of YA and mythology, but also to those of you (like me) that are new to this whole Greek mythology thing - brilliant!

  1. I worry a little bit about the ending but in general I adore mythological reads so I'm looking forward to Antigoddess. I'm not exactly new to Greek mythology but I have always enjoyed it as well!

  2. I'm the opposite of you in that I love reading books that deal with mythology and know a ton about Greek mythology. That troubles me a little bit with regard to this book, because I don't want to end up over-analyzing it or not being satisfied with Blake's modernized interpretation. But I'm also hopeful that I'll end up really enjoying this one. Guess I'll have to read it to find out for myself!

Please leave a comment, I love reading each and every one of them :).
