REVIEW: Scent of Magic - Maria V. Snyder

Scent of Magic - Maria V. Snyder

Hunted, Killed—Survived?

As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of her friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomanical King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confident, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.

Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon’s opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon’s most horrible creations yet; an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.

War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible ... again.

My Review: 4.5/5*

*This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

I really enjoyed this book. It was a massive step up from the last book. Filled with twists and turns, trust battles and uncertainty, it was difficult to put down. I cannot believe the massive cliffhanger it has ended on though! Maria, what are you trying to do to us?! Haha. December seems like such a long way away right now. Fantasy/ romance/ action adventure lovers, this is most certainly for you.

This book picks up where Touch of Magic left off. Avry and Kerrick are adjusting to their new found romance, recovering from her death and planning their next steps in the war between the Realms. This results in Kerrick heading towards his Prince Ryne to strategise and Avry heading towards Estrid's camp. This is further complicated through the fact that Avry must hide her true identity - only herself and Kerrick are to know that she is still alive. It was fascinating to see Avry transform into a military leader. She came across as a weaker character in the previous book and I was happy to see that she was now a fully fledged fighter, fighting for the safety of the people from Tohon, fighting to mend the broken bond with her sister, and to win back the trust of her boys (Quain, Lorin, Belen, Flea).

What was also interesting was the introduction to Kerrick's family and the introduction to the wilder tribes in which he is captured. I loved how Maria showed the difference in the character of Kerrick once away from Avry. It was particularly bizarre to see how much he truly likes her. Having been used to his snipey attitude in the last book and the total lack of emotion, it was very strange to see a completely different side to him. Alongside his development, we also see the development of our new little healer, Danny. So, so cute and so loyal! He is absolutely lovely. He is one of the children saved by Avry at the end of Touch of Power and it's really cool to see him developing into a little healer away from any evil despite his treatment by Tohon.

I highly recommend this book to all fantasy lovers. I can't wait to see what new twists are going to come through Flea as his powers develop further and Avry comes to realise that the Lilies only takes people with magical potential. It's an epic journey in which they develop new ways of fighting against Tohon's dead army, they come up against constant confrontations with other characters and I REALLY can't wait to see what's happened to Belen. Where are you? :(.
