Crewel - Gennifer Albin
Enter a tangled world of secrets and intrigue where a girl is in charge of other’s destinies, but not her own.
Sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys has always been special. When her parents discover her gift—the ability to weave the very fabric of reality—they train her to hide it. For good reason, they don’t want her to become a Spinster — one of the elite, beautiful, and deadly women who determine what people eat, where they live, how many children they have, and even when they die.
Thrust into the opulent Western Coventry, Adelice will be tried, tested and tempted as she navigates the deadly politics at play behind its walls. Now caught in a web of lies and forbidden romance, she must unravel the sinister truth behind her own unspeakable power. Her world is hanging by a thread, and Adelice, alone, can decide to save it — or destroy it.
Crewel is a book that I just couldn't wait to get my hands on - I was ecstatic when I logged onto Net Galley to see that it had been approved! I immediately got to reading it, and I will admit, I wasn't drawn in immediately. About 30% in I began wondering whether this book was one for me after all... it goes without saying that this book certainly upped its pace!
Gennifer Albin constructs a terrifying world in which every action and movement is monitored and that anything is editable or removable by a select number of people. The novel introduces us to our protagonist; Adelice Lewys a girl whose parents is trying to protect her from the eyes in Western Coventry that seeks to take her away to become a Spinster. A Spinster is one of many overly beautified women whose occupation is to weave - to be controlled by the Guild, to edit and remove everything and everyone they demand. Unfortunately, Adelice slips up and reveals her gift, she is soon taken away to Western Coventry in which she is subject to many dirty tricks and attempts to convert her into their natural order. Needless to say, Adelice does not come quietly.
This novel was fantastic. With so many twists and turns and hidden identities I was kept on the edge of my seat. Granted it took me awhile to get into it, but once I was in that was it! It was interesting to see the developing relationships between Adelice, Jost and Erik. Most people run a mile at the mention of a love triangle but this one was dealt with easily and did not dominate the true plot of the book. I loved Adelice's mentor Enora; a selfless spinster who risks all for her charge, Loricel; the creweler - the one who has the ultimate power over the weave. I don't want to talk to much about the characters for fear of ruining the book for anyone who has yet to read it.
Albin's cleverly constructed a terrifying, dark world in which I lost myself entirely. With many character to hate, and many to love your emotions are given a rollercoaster ride up until the very end. I cannot wait to read the next one!
